Education The Last Frontier, Land of the Midnight Sun, a land of pioneers and of Arctic mystique, the Iditarod, polar bears, and tremendous scenery; this is Alaska, a land of opportunity that looks "North to the Future". Alaska truly represents a frontier for biotechnology and life sciences research. While few biotechnology companies exist within Alaska, research already present or in development promises to advance the Last Frontier's life sciences industry. While Alaska is the largest of the United States geographically, its population remains low at just over 657,000 people, ranking it 47th in the nation. Alaska provides a system of colleges within the University of Alaska, with three separate universities: The University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. The largest of the United States contains an amazing array of recreational and entertainment opportunities, both indoors and out. Alaska diversifies its transportation needs based on the special challenges of its landscape and climate. The Last Frontier is first in the nation in its size. Alaska's name is based on the Aleut word "alaxsxaq", which means roughly "the mainland".
