Alaska provides a system of colleges within the University of Alaska, with three separate universities: The University of Alaska Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. Several community colleges are included within this university system. Over 32,000 students take advantage of the many degrees and programs within the University of Alaska system.

Other colleges include the private Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Prince William Sound Community College in Valdez, and the private liberal arts college, Sheldon Jackson College on Baranof Island in Sitka.

Public schools for children are governed by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, in which the State Board sets education policy. About 500 public schools among 53 districts offer free schooling to children in both towns and rural communities, with a variety of cultures represented.

Other educational opportunities include about 60 Charter Schools and numerous private and denominational schools, educating approximately 5,000 students.
